In the event that a baby tooth is lost due to trauma or an extraction, a space maintainer may need to be placed in order to hold the space for the permanent tooth that will erupt into that space. Without a space maintainer, there’s an increased risk of the adjacent teeth drifting and blocking out the space needed for the permanent tooth.
